Respiratory Muscle Strength Training: Foundations and Evidence

Explore the critical role of respiratory function in airway protection, speech, voice, and resonance, with a focus on its clinical implications for individuals with neurological conditions. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of respiratory mechanics, phonation, and airway protection mechanisms, along with case-based insights into the impact of respiratory dysfunction on communication. The course also examines common neurological diseases affecting respiration, their pathophysiology, and evidence-based management strategies. Designed to provide practical knowledge, it equips participants with the skills to assess and address respiratory-related communication challenges effectively.

Learning Objectives:

1.  Describe the biomechanics of inhalation and exhalation.

2. Explain the impact of impaired ventilatory support on speech and resonance.
3. Identify common neurological diseases that impact respiratory function and their effects.
4. Determine the effects of respiratory dysfunction on communication and airway protection.
5. Develop basic strategies to support communication and airway protection in patients with neurological etiologies.
